Banjo Paterson’s Village Between Yass and Harden
Binalong is a small village on the Burley Griffin Way and the Main Southern railway, roughly half an hour north-west of Yass in the Yass Valley local government area. It is best known as the place where a young Banjo Paterson went to school and where the bushranger Johnny Gilbert was shot in 1865 and buried in the police paddock. A pub, a general store, a school, a hall and a cluster of weatherboard and brick homes make up the village, surrounded by sheep and cropping country.
The residents of Binalong are a mix of farming families, retirees, tradespeople and a growing set of commuters who work in Yass or Canberra and want the quiet of a village at the end of the day. Our technicians visit from the Yass side as well as on Harden runs, and a good deal of the help Binalong households and businesses need is delivered remotely.
Village Homes, Farm Cottages and the Signal Question
Within the village most homes are on NBN fixed wireless or the older phone-line service, and the surrounding properties use fixed wireless where the tower is visible, Sky Muster where it is not, and increasingly Starlink. Mobile reception is fair along the highway and poor in the folds of the hills. Houses range from tiny railway-era cottages to renovated farmhouses with a home office in the old dairy.
What Binalong families ask for is reliable rather than fancy: a connection that survives a Canberra work-from-home day, school laptops that stay charged and updated, a printer that all the household devices can find, and the old family photos safely backed up somewhere other than a single hard drive.
Small Businesses with a Big Postcode
Binalong’s business base is a general store, a hotel, a small number of trades and service operators, and the farms and properties that surround the village. Add to that a handful of home-based consultants, bookkeepers and craftspeople who chose village life but sell to customers in Canberra and beyond, and the occasional heritage-tourism visitor drawn by the Paterson and Gilbert connections.
For the farms the office is the business, and it usually lives on one computer with the accounting software, the stock records and the email on it. For the store and pub it is the till, the bookings and the suppliers’ portals. We look after all of it, keep it backed up and secure, and make sure a technician can reach it remotely so a fault does not wait for the next drive out from Yass.
Where Binalong Sits and How We Reach It
The Burley Griffin Way links Binalong east to Bowning and Yass and west to Galong, Harden and Murrumburrah. Illalong Creek, where the Paterson family farmed, lies just to the south-east, and the road north climbs toward Boorowa. The railway still passes through, though most travel is by car, and Canberra is a little over an hour away on a good run down the Hume.
Because Binalong is between Yass and Harden, it falls on two of our regular routes, which makes on-site visits easier to organise than for more isolated localities. Remote sessions handle most software and email jobs on the spot; for hardware and networks we aim for same-day or next-business-day visits where we can. If you are heading into Yass anyway, we can sometimes meet you there instead.
Other places we look after in the 2584 postcode include Illalong Creek 2584. See every suburb in Goulburn – Yass, or our IT Support Canberra page for the whole district.
