Numbaa is a farming locality on the southern floodplain of the Shoalhaven River, east of Nowra and Terara on the road out to Pyree and Greenwell Point, with Comerong Island and the river’s mouth beyond. It is flat, green, fertile land, worked for dairy and beef since the nineteenth century, with old farmhouses on slight rises, milking sheds, silage pits and the levee banks that tell you what the river can do.
The people of Numbaa are mostly farming families and their workers, along with a few residents on rural lots who drive into Nowra for work and appreciate the open sky and the ten-minute trip to town. Technology here has a particular flavour: it serves a working farm, it has to be reachable across a wide property and it must be able to survive, or be quickly recovered after, the floods that come through every few years.
Farmhouse Technology That Can Weather a Flood
Homes at Numbaa are established farmhouses and a small number of newer builds, generally single-storey and spread out, with the family’s devices competing for a modem installed wherever the old phone line came in. Internet is a mix of fixed wireless, mobile broadband and satellite, with the flat terrain helping fixed wireless where a tower is in range. Mobile coverage is generally reasonable in the open.
The households are multigenerational as often as not, so the needs run from a grandparent’s tablet for video calls and banking to a teenager’s school laptop and the streaming that keeps a wet weekend bearable. What is unusual is the flood factor. Modems, computers and backups need to be placed and organised so that a rising river does not mean a lost family archive or a week without contact.

Farming at Numbaa is serious business. Dairies run milking systems, vat monitoring and herd apps; graziers manage livestock identification, sales and agistment; contractors handle silage, fencing and effluent systems; and the whole operation lives on spreadsheets, cloud accounting and portals for processors, banks and government. A few farms have diversified into farm-gate sales or agritourism, which adds bookings and payments to the list.

Nowra is ten to fifteen minutes away in normal conditions and completely out of reach when the river cuts the road. Culburra Beach and Orient Point are across the Crookhaven; Worrigee and Mayfield are to the south. The whole area is on the flood maps for good reason.
Being so near Nowra, Numbaa is a quick visit for us and we can generally come out promptly, working around milking times.
