A Railway Town on the Cobb Highway
Ivanhoe is an outback town in the Central Darling Shire, sitting on the Cobb Highway about 200 kilometres north of Hay and roughly 300 kilometres south-east of Broken Hill. The Indian Pacific line passes through, and the town grew up around the railway and the sheep stations of the surrounding saltbush plains. Today it has a central school, a police station, a health service, a hotel, a roadhouse, a caravan park, a council depot and a couple of hundred residents who know each other by name.
It is a long way from anywhere with a computer shop. Mildura, Broken Hill and Griffith are each several hours away by road, so a failed laptop or a dead modem cannot simply be dropped off somewhere on the way to work. Ivanhoe residents, station families and the town’s few businesses need IT help that works over the phone and the internet, with visits planned properly for the jobs that need them. That is what we provide.
Town Homes and Station Homesteads Hours From a Shop
Homes in Ivanhoe are modest fibro, weatherboard and brick houses on wide streets, some council or government housing for staff at the school, police and health service, and the homesteads and quarters of stations spread across the district. In town, NBN is available on fixed wireless or satellite, and mobile coverage is limited to the town and its immediate surrounds. On the stations, Starlink has been widely taken up, sometimes alongside older Sky Muster dishes, and mobile reception generally means driving to a known spot.
For Ivanhoe households, the most useful thing we do is fix problems without anybody having to travel: cleaning up a slow computer, restoring email access, setting up a new phone, recovering photos, and helping children and teachers get school devices working on the home connection. When hardware fails we advise on the best way to get it repaired or replaced, which sometimes means a courier and sometimes a scheduled visit.
The Businesses That Keep an Outback Town Going
Ivanhoe’s businesses and organisations are few but essential: the roadhouse and fuel, the hotel and caravan park serving Cobb Highway travellers, the general store, the council depot and works crews, the school and health service, contractors who shear, fence, muster and cart stock, and the pastoral stations themselves, which are substantial businesses managing thousands of hectares from a homestead office.
We help these operators with the technology they depend on: EFTPOS and point-of-sale that survives a dropped connection, backups of station records and business accounts, Microsoft 365 for the office, cameras on fuel bowsers and sheds, and a plan for what happens when the one computer that runs everything stops. For stations, we also set up remote access so an agent, accountant or family member in the city can work on the books without a five-hour drive.
Ivanhoe and the Country Around It
Ivanhoe is the hub for a cluster of pastoral localities that share its 2878 postcode: Mossgiel to the south toward Hay and Willandra National Park, Trida to the east along the railway, Manara to the west, and Conoble and Beilpajah on the plains around them. The Cobb Highway runs north from Hay through Booligal to Ivanhoe and on to Wilcannia, and roads to Balranald, Menindee and the Darling towns fan out from here, most of them unsealed beyond the town limits. Note that although this page sits within our Lower Murray region, Ivanhoe is a long way north of the river itself.
Remote support is the normal way we work with Ivanhoe, and it handles most software, account and configuration faults. For anything that needs hardware in hand, we talk through the options: a courier to and from town, a scheduled visit that we combine with other properties in the district, or in some cases guiding a handy local through a straightforward swap over a video call. We always check road conditions and weather before committing to a trip.
Other places we look after in the 2878 postcode include Beilpajah 2878, Conoble 2878, Manara 2878, Mossgiel 2878 and Trida 2878. See every suburb in Lower Murray, or our IT Support Canberra page for the whole district.
