Fenced Sanctuary Country in the Far West Mallee
Scotia is a locality in the mallee of far south-western New South Wales, close to the South Australian border and north-west of Wentworth. It is best known for the Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary, a large conservation property with feral-predator-free fenced areas where threatened mammals such as bilbies and numbats have been reintroduced. Around the sanctuary are pastoral stations running sheep and cattle across the same red sand, mallee and spinifex country.
That gives Scotia an unusual mix of people for such a remote place: conservation land managers and field ecologists, visiting researchers and volunteers, and station families. All of them work with data and devices in conditions that are hard on equipment, hours from any town, on satellite connections shared between a homestead or field station and everyone who happens to be staying. We support Scotia households, stations and site-based teams in that setting, remotely by default and on site when planned.
Homesteads, Field Stations and Volunteer Quarters
Homes at Scotia are station homesteads, conservation staff houses and the quarters used by researchers, students and volunteers during field seasons. Power is solar and generator, internet is Starlink or Sky Muster, and mobile phones are useful only as cameras and clocks, and even the clock may be on South Australian time. Residents range from long-term families to people who have arrived for a fortnight of trapping surveys.
We help the permanent households with the usual rural essentials: satellite and Wi-Fi setup, Wi-Fi calling, remote maintenance, backups and time zone fixes. For the transient population we set up shared accommodation networks that give everyone a fair go, keep the staff and research systems separate, and make it easy for a new arrival to connect their laptop and phone in a few minutes without help.
Conservation Data, Research Laptops and Station Records
The organisations working at Scotia handle a lot of data: camera trap images, tracking and survey records, GPS files, weather data and reports that must reach head offices, universities and funding bodies. Field laptops and tablets live in dusty utes and swags, and a lost device can mean a lost season of results. The surrounding stations have the more familiar needs of pastoral businesses, with records, agents, accountants and water telemetry.
We support both. For the conservation and research side, that means rugged field devices set up to record offline and sync at base, secure file storage and sharing so head offices receive data without a courier, and backups of everything that matters. For the stations, we provide protected office computers, remote access for agents and accountants, and telemetry connected to the homestead. We are comfortable working alongside a distant organisational IT team to meet their requirements from a site with no mobile coverage.
Scotia on the Edge of the State
Scotia lies in the mallee north-west of Wentworth and west of the Anabranch, with Pine Camp to the south, Rufus and Lake Victoria further south toward the Murray, and the South Australian border to the west. Access is by long unsealed roads from the Silver City Highway or from South Australia, and the tracks are slow in the dry and closed in the wet. Wentworth and Mildura are hours away; Broken Hill is a long day’s drive north.
We support Scotia remotely as the rule, which suits organisations whose staff rotate through and whose IT must be maintainable from afar. Visits are planned ahead, timed for the start of a field season where that helps, and combined with other properties in the mallee and around Wentworth. Equipment is usually prepared by us and sent to Wentworth or Mildura for collection, then finished remotely once it is on site.
Other places we look after in the 2648 postcode include Anabranch North 2648, Anabranch South 2648, Boeill Creek 2648, Cal Lal 2648 and Curlwaa 2648. See every suburb in Lower Murray, or our IT Support Canberra page for the whole district.
